To Think and to Imagine

There is no way, at least in my book, of overestimating the usefulness of imagination in life. I’m not just talking about fantasizing and spacing out, I’m sure you don’t need me to tell you how often we all use that capacity. I’m talking about how useful the understanding of the uses of the imagination is when it comes to in selling merchandise.

In case you haven’t here, the multibillion dollar industry called the advertising industry is all aout using the imagination to make sales. I’m not talking about the brains and genius in some cases of finding out how to create a successful advertising campaign; I’m talking about knowing how to understand how we as consumers use our imaginations.

Here is a classic example of the use of the imagination in the clothing industry.  As a matter of fact I can sum it up in one word; mannequins.

Everyone has seen a mannequin before but how many people has asked themselves why stores use mannequins? I got some news for you, they don’t only use mannequins in clothing stores to draw your attention to the latest in fashion, the use them to get you to see yourself as the mannequin.

Let me make this a bit clearer. When you see a picture perfect mannequin, which means when you see a slim muscular highly defined mannequin, you don’t just walk by and say “hey, there is a mannequins wearing some clothing” you actually employ the use of your imagination. You start thinking subconsciously that you will look as good as the mannequin does if you would by the clothing that the mannequins are wearing.

This is a simple yet classic example of how effective this simple understanding of the uses of the knowledge of the workings of the imagination are, not only practical but can really make you a ton of money. You don’t need me to tell you this, every store in the country that sells clothing knows this as well as a priest knows the bible, nothing sells as well as the clothing you put on a mannequin.
