The Last Refuge of the Hat
What is the last refuge of the hat supposed to mean? Well the answer is simple, but before I get into the explanation I first have to establish the problem, and the problem is that no one wares hats anymore. Now I know this doesn’t sound like a big issue to but it really is. Ill will explain why in a moment, but first I want to make myself plain. I own a hat store. Not a hat store that sells baseball caps, I own a hat store that sells fedoras and top hats.
At this point I would not be surprised if you were thinking; “poor guy is in a business where there is not business” and I wouldn’t blame you for thinking so. But I do have customers and can still pay my rent if that’s what you are thinking. But the truth is that my disappointment about people no longer wearing hats is not only because there is a precipitous decline in my business over the years but because in my estimation the decline of hats is a symptom of a more severe problem that plagues our society namely; the loss of respectfulness.
By the way I do manage to ell hats and that is because of my excessive use of mannequins and mannequin heads. If people see the hats being worn by life-like mannequins it makes a pronounced impression, but to continue with the point, the loss of respectfulness in the youth.
Now I could go into a major tirade about how children and young adults today don’t really give a damn about what their elders have to say but I know I will be boring you. So I will make it simple. In times when heads were covered all throughout history, those were the times when people respected their parents and by extension, respected their elders in general. While it is true that I can put beautiful hats on good mannequins it is nevertheless not an effective way to get people to start covering their heads. I would love any suggestions.
