Nothing Can Compete with a Real Store

Time flashes by so fast these days. Not only in because there is so much to do but because there are so many ways to do them. With cell phones and internet the world has become a smaller place and many things that were once done face to face, person to person are no long done as much by the cast majority of people.

This is both a good thing and a bad thing. It is a mix of blessing a curse. On the one hand I doubt that anyone regrets the fact that travelling is a hundred times faster than it once was and that talking to relatives thousands of miles away is no longer belongs to the realm of science fiction. But it has come at a price. There is an increasing sense of isolation in the world and despite the emails and social networks the world of the individual has become a smaller place.

But this is not another article that aims to delineate the damage of modern technology. I for one am a major consumer and fan of modern innovation. But there is one area in which I am force to admit a flaw in principal on the part of technology and that is shopping for clothing online. Now I know that most of you would reject this position as obscured but if you hear me out I am convinced that you would agree with me.

Shopping for clothing online is very efficient and it will almost inevitably lead to significant savings. But the question today is; can online shopping ever replace physical concrete store in the way that cell phones have replace the telegraph? For me the answer is an emphatic no and here is why.

When you walk into a store and see clothing on a mannequin or dress form you immediately get an idea of what is the latest in the world of fashion. Seeing clothing on a mannequin gives you some direction as opposed to viewing thousands of items on an online store. But this is not the crux of my argument. You need to try on clothing before you buy them. Everyone knows that every company has a different idea of what a size 2 or a size 4 looks like and trying to get an idea of how it is going to look on you is something that a tall skinny modal is not going to properly converge.
